Events DC Joins Forces with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington to Host First-Ever Youth Esports League Championship,

Events DC partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington and the Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis to host the first Youth Esports League Championship. Participating youth from both Boys & Girls Clubs competed in a six-week single elimination bracket-style tournament featuring Madden NFL 17 and NBA 2K17, which culminated for the championship on August 5 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s “SAAM Arcade” event. The Greater Washington Club won the championship in Madden NFL 17, while the Annapolis Club won in NBA 2k17.
Youth from both Boys and Girls Clubs competed their semifinal and final matches of Madden NFL 17 and NBA 2k17 games on the big stage in front of a live audience at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and a live video stream on Events DC’s Twitch channel. Viewers were treated to play-by-play commentating from Mega Ran and NRG Esports’ Nairo.
As part of its broader mission, Events DC provides community benefits for residents and enriching the lives of youth across the District. The goal of the esports youth tournament is to not only serve but to connect the local gaming community by investing in DC youth-based programming and to support DC as an esports destination, while acting as a catalyst for economic development. The youth-focused tournaments are designed to further hone and promote life skills of leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills for the betterment of our city’s next generation.
This event represents an additional milestone in Events DC’s strategic approach to building an esports capital in Washington, DC. In the future, Events DC looks to attract future visitors, residents, tournaments and economic prosperity to the Entertainment and Sports Arena through esports events and tournaments. The 4,200-seat, state-of-the-art multipurpose arena will be fully tailored and wired for esports, in addition to serving as the new home of the WNBA team the Washington Mystics and the new practice facility of the NBA team the Washington Wizards.
