iCAN Technical Theater Shines the Spotlight on Ward 8 Youth
Building Bridges Across the River’s (BBAR) iCAN Technical Theater internship program, an Events DC Fiscal Year 2021 Community Grant awardee, provides Ward 8 youth with knowledge and hands-on experience in sound engineering, lighting & design, front-of-house management, video/stage management and scenic design. Like many programs across the city, the COVID-19 health emergency has forced iCAN to deviate from its in-person programming to ensure that youth learn in a safe and healthy environment.
Throughout the pandemic, iCAN interns continued to meet virtually providing support to one another from the comfort of their homes. While working remotely, iCAN interns created “digital diaries” or short videos about their experiences at home during the pandemic and staff-led virtual team meetings to celebrate graduating seniors. Click the links below to view more highlights from Ward 8 youth enrolled in the iCAN Technical Theater Internship program over the past several months:
- The iCAN Instagram page features digital diary videos.
- 2020 Virtual Production Challenge: After 5 weeks of virtual summer training, this year’s production challenge went virtual.
- iCAN partnership with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s Tech-Teach program transitioned to a virtual program, with interns continuing to learn scenic design and carpentry skills. Hear directly from interns about their experience with iCAN and Tech Teach. We salute iCAN intern Bre’Launna Patterson on joining Smithsonian Exhibits as a fellow in October.
