Ward 8 Celebrates America’s Night Out Against Crime

On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, the Ward 8 community celebrated the 36th annual America’s Night Out Against Crime at the Mary Virginia Merrick Center located at 4275 4th Street, SE.

District residents joined their neighbors, police officers, and other community leaders to celebrate National Night Out. This event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s festivities didn’t resemble years past that featured numerous moon bounces, face painting, haircuts, and a community cookout. The 2020 event provided residents the opportunity to obtain a COVID-19 test, prepackaged meals, school supplies, and community resource materials. The parameters put in place due to the pandemic didn’t stop great conversations, smiling faces, fellowship, and laughter that could be felt beyond the mask.

Outdoor Fitness Fun With WEFITDC

The mission of WEFITDC is to close the health and wellness gap among District residents and shine a light on native DMV wellness professionals. With most local gyms and fitness centers temporally closed or restricted due to COVID-19, WEFITDC has taken the lead role in bringing workout sessions to the residents in Wards 7 and 8.

These popup workout sessions were conducted in grocery and convenience store parking lots, permitted DPR spaces, parks, and other open spaces in the District.

On Saturday, October 10, 2020, WEFITDC and Woodland Terrace’s own Indy.B. hosted a female-led workout session in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The event, hosted in the Woodland Terrace community offered a “socially distanced” full-body workout, health and wellness vendors, community resources, along with fresh fruits and healthy juices.

Wearing the traditional pink symbolizing breast cancer awareness, ladies in high spirits gathered to show their support and honored fellow survivors.

NEXT EVENT: Join WEFITDC & ANC 7E at Nalle Elementary School for an explosive social distancing workout.
